Event Details
Anton Shone, local archaeologist and historian, gives a talk on Wirksworth’s unique landscape and the case for its consideration as the lost Roman town of Lutudarum.
Wirksworth sits in a landscape which has an unusual intensity of Roman activity, the most visual indications of which are Roman roads which remain in use to this day. Wirksworth itself perhaps has a good case to be considered to be the lost Roman town of Lutudarum and we will consider how and why this should be so. We will also look at the twilight of the Romano-British age and the beginnings of Mercia.
Anton Shone is a well-known local archaeologist and historian and has supervised a number of digs in and around the town and has sought to enlighten our knowledge of Wirksworth through the ages.
£7 per head to include a first drink.
